Highlights of the week:

This week, in order to get ready for the upcoming “holiday” of Halloween, the kindergarteners have been learning several Halloween poems and songs. Some of the children have even been creating pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns during Discovery Center time. Next week in class, we will carve a face on our pumpkin! Also this week, the children have been working hard to learn Fall theme words. We began making a napkin vocabulary book with Fall words. The children decide the words to include in the book, and draw pictures next to the words just in case they need a reminder of the words. The kinders can use this book in their writing work at school and later at home. This week we also read several Fall related non-fiction books, Seeds and Trees, and made word webs to remember some of the details in the books. At this time of year, we also do a reminder study of living and non-living things and use scarecrows as a an example of non-living things. As you have heard and seen, we continue to build our writing skills in many ways including: when the student of the week helps write the morning message with the help of the class, when we write in our weekend journals, when we complete the “read, write, glue and draw” reading/writing sheets, and when we respond in writing to what we have read in guided reading. This week we added to this list when each kindergartener wrote  a non-fiction book on apples! On Friday, each kinder will share their book with their reading partner. Finally, kindergarteners began sharing their favorite books this week by standing in front of the class and telling the title, author, what happens at the beginning, middle and end of their book or information in the book if it is non-fiction, and why they liked the book they shared with the class. The “book talkers” are doing a fantastic job!

As I mentioned, I am going to be spending the weekend with my first new grandson, Dallas Timothy!

Happy Fall Weekend,

Angie Kelly
