ABOUT RIDGE

The Ridge Family Center for Learning opened in the fall of 2001 as a school of choice in CCSD59 with a variety of unique programs and instructional elements.

Over time, many of these programs and elements scaled out and became a standard part of all other schools in the district. Ridge continues to explore innovative teaching and program practices while investigating a variety of instructional strategies, programs, and structures that correlates with our mission of preparing students to be successful for life. We are open to any child in grades kindergarten through 5th grade who lives in our district boundaries, provided that we have space in the grade level desired. We are not a charter or magnet school, but a CCSD59 school of choice.

OUR SCHOOL MISSION IS “PREPARING STUDENTS TO BE SUCCESSFUL FOR LIFE”

The talented, dedicated staff at Ridge Family Center for Learning creates an environment that supports our mission by “Growing Strong Minds, Strong Bodies and Caring Hearts.”

We grow Strong Minds through inquiry and problem based learning and the design of purposeful and effective curriculum and instruction. Within thinking classrooms our students are provided with opportunities to create, innovate, think critically and collaborate with one another on a daily basis. Coupled with the District 59 Outcomes and Common Core State Standards the pathway for student success is clearly defined for our school community.

We grow Strong Bodies through daily physical activity, eating healthy snacks and foods from our school garden, family fitness nights, and much more. First Lady Michelle Obama and Fuel Up to Play 60 have recognized us for our efforts in being active and adopting healthy lifestyle habits.

We grow Caring Hearts through our “Ridge Way-Being Safe, Respectful & Responsible.” Our students participate in numerous school wide civic projects which they have made donations to local shelters, food pantries, animal shelters and more. Our students understand the importance of being good citizens and take great pride in their efforts.
