Highlights: December 4, 2015Highlights: December 4, 2015

We began a new reading/writing unit in writer’s workshop this week.  We are studying the elements of a nonfiction book, for example, facts, illustrations, labels, photographs, bold print, headings, table of contents and glossary. After we identified these elements in mentor texts, we will decide on a topic in which we are an expert and write a nonfiction book with our reading/writing partner. At this point, the children are choosing a topic and writing three facts about the topic.

Also this week we began our community gingerbread house project with our 5th grade buddies. This is an extension of our social studies unit. This week the kindergarteners made a list of the places in a village that offer goods and services to a community. After choosing a business that offers either a good or a service, the kindergarteners and their buddies drew the business to scale. This coming week we will build and decorate!
