We have finished collecting our pennies and we counting them today using a ten frame and a partner. Then we put a tally mark on the board for each ten frame the groups counted. We found we had 650 pennies or $6.50. WOW! I rounded the amount up to $10.00. Then we decided what we wanted to do with the money, either buy a need or a want for our classroom. After much discussion and voting, it was determined that we would like to get glitter crayons (a want). We then went on amazon and found that we could buy 2 boxes of 16 glitter crayons for exactly $10.00. So we did! We should expect them on Monday. Thanks to all the families that donated the pennies and the students really loved making choices and counting money to buy items for the classroom. This was a great real world problem to end our needs and wants unit in social studies.
