Letter from the PrincipalLetter from the Principal(es)

Dear Parents:

Welcome to the Ridge Family Center for Learning (K-5) for the 2017-18 school year!

My name is Rob Bohanek and I am the school’s principal. My teaching experience is in language arts and social studies in the Chicago Public Schools at Orozco Academy in the Pilsen Neighborhood. Before coming to Ridge I was an assistant principal at King Middle Grade School in Kankakee, Illinois, assistant principal at Holmes Junior High School in CCSD59, and principal at Holmes. I am very excited to continue working with staff, students and families in the Ridge community.

The Ridge Family Center for Learning opened in the fall of 2001 as a school of choice in CCSD59 with a variety of unique programs and instructional elements. Over time, many of these programs and elements scaled out and became a standard part of all other schools in the district. Ridge continues as a school of choice to explore innovative teaching and program practices while investigating a variety of instructional strategies, programs, and structures that correlates with our mission of preparing students to be successful for life. As a school of choice we are open to any child in grades kindergarten through 5th grade who lives in our district boundaries, provided that we have space in the grade level desired.

We have developed the following learning beliefs that are integrated through our planning and learning in support of our mission to prepare students to be successful for life. We believe powerful and deep learning occurs when:

  • Students have choice
  • Students have time to pursue their interests in depth
  • Students arrive at their own solutions
  • Student learning is shared in a global environment
  • Students have the freedom to explore, question, take risks, and make mistakes
  • Students understand the purpose and relevance of what they’re learning
  • Students have a passion to learn
  • Students can apply their learning
  • Every student has a champion – someone who will never give up on them and who helps them reach their potential

As a successful school, the Ridge community will reach outcomes for students that encompass responsible citizenship, healthy physical, emotional, and social development as well as the highest possible learning standards for all. Our outcomes support students becoming successful readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, social scientists, and citizens in “Growing Strong Minds, Strong Bodies, and Caring Hearts.”

Please contact me if you have any questions about Ridge Family Center for Learning.

Best regards,

Dr. Rob Bohanek
Principal
